"Some people think music education is a privilege, but I think it's essential to being human."

- Jewel -

Music is a means of enhancing the passions, creativity, and thought processes of those involved and should be encouraged as part of the curriculum for all school-age students.  More than any other subject, music can touch emotions and facilitate creativity in order to help students feel successful and develop the desire to learn.  Every student has a unique perspective, and it is our job as educators to guide students to show their talents, gain confidence, and bring out their best.  Even for students with passions other than music, learning skills taught in the music curriculum can provide ongoing enjoyment and facilitate greater expression of their passions.  As music educators, we have the unique ability to touch on many other subjects in our music classes.  We can truly shape our program around our community, our students, and our school and should strive to ensure that the students’ needs are first priority as we plan the curriculum.

As educators, it is our job to be model learners for our students.  It is important that we show that we are still learning and growing, so our students desire to do the same.  It is also important for us to show that we can make mistakes and step out of our comfort zone, so they develop confidence in the learning process.  Music education should be delivered by a teacher knowledgeable in music but also passionate about his students and life.  Students should be inspired to create, enjoy, and learn in all areas of their lives.

Music education is important for all students in the K-12 setting. Sometimes, the music program is the only place that students feel safe.  Students find lifelong friends and make lifelong relationships in music programs, and every child can succeed in music.  It is important that the program is open to all students.  Music educators are more than just teachers.  They act as teachers, therapists, parents, and role models.  Music educators must be sensitive to each student in their programs, be flexible with instruction based on need, and be willing to work with other teachers and educational professionals as needed to address the needs of each child.

It is important as music educators to teach a wide variety of musical styles and to shape the music we teach around our community and our students.  We need to be able to challenge our students while still making music fun.  Music is definitely a universal language, and it is our job to encourage students to learn musical skills that will enable them to participate in this universal communication.  I believe that educators should make an effort to address issues of diversity and respect for different cultures and styles by introducing new and interesting music to their students. I believe that various curriculums should be considered based on the ages and needs of the students taught.  There should be a balance between making music, creativity, teaching of basic music skills, using technology, studying types of music, and music appreciation.  Both the interests of the students and their needs in terms of growth and development should be considered.  There should be a balance between challenge and enjoyment.

I feel that it is very important as a teacher to be energetic and enthusiastic while still being focused and organized.  It is important to show students a love for music so they can use that passion to ignite their own passion.  Students need to experience music in a way that they have never experienced anything else.  They need to be touched by music, so they can continue to give the gift of music to others.   Music is an amazing gift, and we, as educators, have one of the greatest responsibilities of presenting this gift to our next generation.
