Elementary General

I had the opportunity to teach Elementary General music at Milton Hershey School in the Elementary Division.  Mr. Kent Pierce acted as my cooperating teacher.  I taught grades Pre-K through fourth.  I am very thankful for the experiences that MHS gave me.

During my time at MHS, I developed a recorder unit with the third grade students.  These students had never played a musical instrument before, so they were very excited to play the recorder. We reviewed note reading and learned five new notes on the recorder.  My cooperating teacher finished the remainder of the unit after I left.

The first grade classes completed a unit on the foundations of music while I was at Milton Hershey School.  We explored steady beat, tempo, rhythm, and high and low sounds.  We then developed our own compositions using body percussion and performed them for the class.

I learned a lot at Milton Hershey School.  I had never taught Elementary General before, and this was a great place to explore and learn with the students.  Many of these students must work to overcome learning disabilities and behavioral issues. This was a challenge in the classroom. However, the students pushed me to gain skills which will lead to my development as a better educator.
